Articles

There are plenty of interesting people who write interesting things out there, so I've posted some of their work here.

Homosexuality and the Church by Paul Roberts
Paul wrote this informally for a group of friends, hoping to generate healthy dialogue around one of the most prominent and divisive issues facing the Church today. I was so moved and challenged by what Paul wrote, I asked permission to post his article on this blog. Although not originally intended to be read by those outside a small circle of friends, he graciously agreed. Please read it with this in mind. And although Paul claims it's "a rambling stream-of-consciousness thing", I think you'll find it an excellent piece with a clear thought progression. I believe Paul has tapped into God's heart for the Church concerning homosexuality - and it's no easy issue! Read away, and feel free to share your thoughts.

What is the Church? by Andrew Brumme
In June 2005, Robert Sagers wrote an article called "The Wedding Planner" explaining and defining the church from his perspective. Disagreeing with him on several key points, I spent the following year studying the New Testament to gain a more complete understanding of what it says and does not say about the church. The study was a delightful experience, and the discoveries from it were thrilling. I plan to write a number of articles sharing my findings from the study in the coming months, but have begun with this article, answering the question "What is the Church?", as well as an article written specifically in Response to the Wedding Planner article.

There's No Pulpit Like Home by By Rita Healy, David Van Biema
This article is from the Feb. 27, 2006 issue of TIME Magazine, drawing attention to the fact that “Some Evangelicals are abandoning megachurches for minichurches--based in their own living rooms”. We may well see more press about this in the coming days.

Author's Note from Christ the Lord by Anne Rice
Anne Rice's "Christ the Lord" is a fictional story about the childhood of Jesus, but it is meticulously based on the Gospel accounts and an extraordinary amount of research. This is the Author's Note from the back of the book where she shares about her personal journey leading up to writing this book, including her dramatic converstion to Christ in the process. It's absolutely fascinating, as Anne Rice is known for her fictional stories about vampires and frankly, very dark novels. Read this Author's Note, then read the book!

Between Heaven & Earth: C. S. Lewis on Asceticism & Holiness by David W. Fagerberg
This is a fantastic piece on Lewis and asceticism (a word which prior to reading this article I couldn't have even defined for you). It is well worth the time to read and think through it. I found it very enlightening! It is from Touchstone Magazine.

We’re Living in Bible Times by Andrew Myers
Part Two of Andrew Myers' thought-provoking reflections on his trip to Israel.

Don’t Poke the Pupil of God: Moral equivalency threatens Jewish survival by Andrew Myers
Mr. Myers has written a series of articles reflecting on his time in Israel in the summer of 2005. A gifted writer, he graciously agreed to let me enhance the intellectual level of my website by posting his thought-provoking reflections. Here is part one.

The Parable Of Two Sons by Chris Van Velzer
Chris setup his blog (RuinedForLife.net) recently, and continues to pour out Grade-A content. Occasionally, even A+ material, like this article. He graciously allowed me to post this article.

Rob Bell Reflecting on His Ministry by Rob Bell
This letter is printed in the book The Younger Evangelicals by Robert E. Webber. It is a letter written by Pastor Rob Bell of Mars Hill Bible Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Mars Hill has grown to ten thousand in three years without marketing. His thoughts are FANTASTIC and THOUGHT-PROVOKING.

The Wedding Planner by Robert Sagers
I asked my good friend Mr. Sagers to share his perspective on the church based on some my recent blog postings that he raised questions about. He lays out his thoughts clearly and adds excellent meat to the continuing dialogue on this website about the church.

Inside America's Most Powerful Megachurch by Jeff Sharlet
This article is the first half of "Soldiers of Christ: Inside America's Most Powerful Megachurch," a feature by Revealer editor Jeff Sharlet in the May, 2005 issue of Harper's. It's well worth a read...very interesting secular perspective on Ted Haggard and his megachurch in Colorado Springs.

American Idolatry Goes to the Dogs by Robert Sagers
Robbie moves in for the kill with another article...solid stuff. You'd think the guy was going to be a pastor/teacher or something...

Cycle of Foster Care by Grace Deisler
God has clearly called Grace into the realm of social work, and in this essay you see her heart to come alongside pregnant girls in foster care.

Response to "The Passion of Hotel Rwanda" by Rev. Glenn Barth
Very insightful, compelling response to McLaren's article about Hotel Rwanda from someone who worked closely with the promotion of The Passion of the Christ among evangelicals.

Upon This Rock [GQ Magazine] by John Sullivan
This article tells the story of the author's investigative visit to a huge Christian music festival. Very eye-opening! An absolutely fantastic, funny, and deeply insightful article. This is quite long, but well worth the read. Make some time and dive in.

The Meek Shall Inherit Malibu by Robert Sagers and Russell Moore
Mr. Sagers is a good friend of mine who is currently in seminary...he is interning for a big-wig at his seminary, and together they wrote this article. Actually, Robbie wrote it and Moore helped him clean it up (that's my perspective). READ THIS.

The Passion of Hotel Rwanda by Brian McLaren
This article is taken from Leadership Journal. A friend forwarded it to me, and having just seen the movie, I was resonating strongly with McLaren's perspective. Read this...slow down, stop skimming, and read this!

More Than Enough by Matt Degen
I found this article on Relevant Magazine's website (www.relevantmagazine.com). It stood out to me...so I took the liberty of posting it here.

Mexico Reflection (1/29/2005) by Wendy Batt
I wouldn't normally post a mass email that someone wrote, but I have to be honest, this should serve as the "How To" guide for writing mass emails. Wendy's brilliance truly came through in this one. The content may not necessarily interest you, but you have to learn from a mass-emailing pro like Wendy. This is how to do it!

Why I Don't Go to Church Anymore by Wayne Jacobsen
This article is taken from ThirdDayChurches.com. It clearly lays out my own feelings about the type of church fellowship I personally am hoping to be involved in: house churches. Great stuff!
